Chalkboard Signs

wedding chalkboard sign by jennifercalligrapher

It was barely two weeks before my wedding and I was in bed with the flu! Creating this sign was one of the first things I did upon feeling better.

I started by purchasing a large foam board (white) sign from Hobby Lobby and a can of chalkboard paint (black). After giving my foam board several thorough coats of paint and letting it dry in the sun, it was almost ready for writing! First, I rubbed a piece of plain white chalk over the entire board, and then erased it. This gave my board more of a chalkboard look.

I sketched out what I wanted to draw/write using a Mechanical White Lead Pencil from John Neal Booksellers. For the lettering, I enjoyed using a chalk marker. Zig Posterman makes an excellent marker that comes in various sizes and is waterproof when dry. Once the piece was dry, I did go back to remove my pencil markings. I never did get an ‘after picture’ of the board from my wedding, but I stapled pink tulle (also from Hobby Lobby!) to the back and then hung it above the stairway leading to our Photo Booth area. It made for a fun additional to our wedding decor!
